BTEC National in Applied Science with Specialist Units in Animal Sciences, Environment/Earth Sciences or Nutrition
This course is for you if you have an interest in science and a strong desire to specialise in the animal sciences, environmental/ earth sciences or nutrition.
4 GCSEs at grade C or above or other Level 2 qualification preferably at merit including GCSE science at A*-C, and at least a D in maths and English.
In the first year you will cover core units in science such as:
• Fundamentals of science
• Working in the science industry
• Scientific practical techniques
• Physiology of body systems
• Biochemistry and biochemical techniques
• Genetics and genetic engineering
• Chemical laboratory techniques
Year 2 Environmental/Earth Science Specialist units such as:
• Scientific investigations
• Principles of plant and soil science
• Astronomy
• Energy changes, sources and applications
Year 2 Animal Sciences Specialist units such as:
• Scientific Investigations
• Physiology
• Diseases and Infections
• Microbiology
Year 2 Nutrition specialist units such as:
• Scientific Investigations
• Microbiology
• Chemical Analysis
• Nutrition
BTEC Nationals are valued by both employers and universities. You could progress onto degree courses in animal science, animal care or management, animal health, animal welfare, environmental science/technology, ecology, geosciences, biodiversity, food science, nutrition, dietetics, food technology and food microbiology. Alternatively you could work as a veterinary nurse, animal technician, food technician, environmental technician or in a laboratory environment.
