Norwich University College of the Arts could soon be a university

Norfolk could soon be home to two universities after the government announced plans to allow smaller institutions to adopt the prestigious title.

Norwich University College of the Arts (NUCA) has been unable to take university status because of its size, but now the government has outlined plans to change the boundaries and allow those with fewer than 4,000 but more than 1,000 students to take the name.

Job training boost for Norfolk and Suffolk energy sector

A skilled work force capable of filling almost 50,000 new jobs in the energy sector is to be created in East Anglia, the leaders of three county councils have jointly agreed.

With one of the world’s largest offshore wind farm being constructed off the Norfolk and Suffolk coast in the next few years and plans to build Sizewell C nuclear power plant gathering pace, council leaders in the region have pledged to work together to ensure that jobs created along the “energy coast” will stay in this region.

Norwich City College’s £500,000 plan to change the face of further education

City College Norwich is spending £500,000 to create an enterprise zone that it hopes could begin to change the face of further and higher education.

The Ipswich Road college is aiming to give students “Dragon’s Den-style” entrepreneurial skills to set up their own businesses, pitch their ideas and survive in an increasingly competitive world.

College principal Dick Palmer said the days of students getting qualification and walking into a job were coming to an end.

Norfolk college moves into top gear for students

A drive to create a new generation of agricultural engineers is taking shape rapidly at Easton College.

The latest investment of more than £350,000 in new facilities will create another hub of excellence at which to train the engineers of the future, says principal David Lawrence.

Building work on the agricultural engineering unit will be finished within the next few weeks.

The college says it has been achieved because of savings and good cost control on other major capital projects led by assistant principal Christopher Nix.

Time to Train regulations not extended to SMEs

The Government has now decided not to extend the right to request time to train to employees of small or mediums sized organisations for the foreseeable future. The right will continue to be available to employees in large organisations with 250 or more employees.

A training grants scheme, 'Beyond 2010', funded by the East of England Development Agency and the European Social Fund, is being delivered again this year following a tendering process which was won by the previous programme managers Essex County Council.
